How Greening Homes is Strengthening their Workforce with Journeyman

For Chris Philipps, president of Greening Homes in Toronto, finding qualified carpenters for his business has always been a challenging task. Then he discovered the possibility of enhancing his workforce with qualified carpenters from Germany while educating his local tradespeople at the same time. In this Interview, he shares his experience of partnering with the German Start-Up. 

How did your partnership with Journeyman become reality?

Chris: It was the persistence of the owner combined with the need we have for qualified carpenters, that led to the conversation with Journeyman. In the beginning, there were doubts about bringing on someone from abroad, but I am very happy that we stayed in contact.

What changed your mind about partnering with Journeyman?  

Chris: Well the first thing was really the ability to communicate with the company; the personal conversations with the staff at Journeyman helped foster a great level of trust. Another fact was that there is no upfront payment, unlike other recruiting firms in Canada. Journeyman’s flexible payment structure was absolutely key to winning our business. And of course, we also knew that the German education system is known to produce only the highest caliber of tradespeople.   

On a personal note: How is the relationship between yourself, the candidates, as well as your team? 

Chris: A lot of feedback I get from my team is that the candidates get along really well with the team members and they integrate perfectly. The biggest add on for us is the fresh perspective that they provide. Their excitement to be here is very valuable and adds energy to the whole team.

From your point of view as a Business Owner: What are the main advantages?  

Chris: I think hiring someone from Germany is a great supplement to the current crew as the candidates contribute with new ideas, methods, and construction techniques. They also foster diversity in our workplace. Through the background check Journeyman carries out on the candidates, I know that only top candidates are being proposed to me. It also ends up being a unique selling feature when we advertise for other local Carpenters to come on board.  

Anything else you would add? 

Chris: I am just very, very happy with your services and to be part of the program. I absolutely intend to continue the partnership with new candidates through Journeyman.
